If you were reading along with my live blogging from the North Dakota State Democratic Convention last evening you may be wondering what happened to my posts after the Senator Obama speech. It turns out campaign buttons and smart phone screens don't like to play together in your pocket. The button left the touch-screen on my phone inoperable and the beer in the hospitality suites after the speeches left me inoperable.
So, what about Hillary? She was welcomed by a slightly smaller crowd than heard Senator Obama and all in attendance were given a unique opportunity to compare the two candidates. There were some stark differences in the two speeches that stood out immediately
Sen. Obama's speech was one of hope and promise, seeming very Presidential and confident. His message and humor were well-received by the standing room only crowd of over 17,000. At many points he acknowledged the issues most concerning North Dakotans - jobs, the economy, agriculture and the war in Iraq.
Sen. Clinton contrasted Sen. Obama by speaking of being a fighter and of battling the GOP for the rights of the disadvantaged, for health care reform and several times mentioned her husbands term in office. She repeated a controversial story of a young single mother who lost her baby and her own life later because of a health care system that is in disarray.
All in all it was a powerful evening and one that was indeed unique in a state that has become accustomed to being overlooked this late into an election year.
