In today's Huffington Post, Arianna Huffington asks "Why Won't The Media Pursue the Pentagon Propaganda Scandal?" She's referring to the April 20th article in the New York Times titled "Behind TV Analysts, Pentagon’s Hidden Hand." In Ms. Huffington's words the article was an "expose of the Bush administration's use of Pentagon-approved, prepped, and financially-enriched 'military analysts' to appear on TV to help sell the invasion of Iraq, and then put a positive spin on the occupation -- even as conditions on the ground deteriorated."
The answer to her question is simple and disturbing, but not surprising. Mainstream Media doesn't want to pursue this story simply to avoid self-incrimination. MSM is guilty of several forms of coercion, complacency and sloth. Objective, investigative journalism in the MSM is dead and is past the point of resurrection. Instead, well-rehearsed and well-paid ideologues representing the politically powerful Washington propaganda outfits sit on panels all day towing the party line talking points.
Ms. Huffington attempted to track down the media outrage over such a powerful story and found nothing of substance.A Lexis/Nexis search turned up no other coverage of this should-be major story. Nothing from Brian Williams or Katie Couric or Charlie Gibson. Nothing from Anderson Cooper or Lou Dobbs or Larry King or Campbell Brown. Nothing from Chris Matthews or Dan Abrams. Nothing from Tim Russert or George Stephanopoulos or Bob Schieffer. Nothing from anyone on Fox News.
Maintream media has disintegrated into entertainment media. God bless Arianna Huffington, Markos Moulitsas and the blogosphere. It may be all we have left.
