Having No Shame

At a press conference this morning to update the nation on Hurricane Gustav, President Bush used the opportunity of national media coverage to again push the Republican 'Drill Now' agenda. At a moment when Gulf Coast residents should have been getting useful information from the White House they were instead fed another bite of the recent steady diet of non-energy policy from the right wing.

After reminding the public that the Gulf Coast is the source of a large percentage of America's oil, The President admonished congress to begin working on opening up new area for drilling when they return from vacation. No mention of the status of levees in and around New Orleans, the current state of electricity and water service or possible flooding.

There is no shame in the Republican party. Forgotten is the disastrous mismanagement of Katrina and Bush's remarkably crass flyover during the disaster. The clear and present danger is apparently oil that would be available in the year 2020.
